FG Partners World Bank to Develop Fresh Policy
Guidelines for Land Transportation
The federal government, through the ministry of
transportation, today began a process to partner the World Bank for the
development of a comprehensive policy guidelines for land transportation in the
country.
Mrs. Yetunde Sonaike on behalf
of the Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, in a statement made available
to journalists in Abuja, said government was ready to work with the bank to
develop a fresh policy guideline for the road sector.
The statement said Amaechi expressed delight at the
proposal from the bank, adding that government, through the ministry, is ready
to work harmoniously and partner the World Bank team on the development of a
comprehensive policy guideline that would promote and galvanize land
transportation in the country.
“I will be glad if you can work with us and develop
a comprehensive land transportation policy,” he said.
According to the statement, the minister said lack
of relevant and appropriate policy guidelines for necessary administrative
management of the sector has been the reason the ministry has not been able to
take full charge of land transportation.
He, however, regretted that the gap created has
hampered the efforts of the ministry at revamping the sector.
On the development and revamping of the rail
sector, he made assurance that the lines being constructed would be linked to
the country’s ports as it is done in other countries.
The minister explained that the government had
earmarked huge sum of money to be given as compensation for demolished structures
along the rail lines.
On completion, Amaechi said the problem associated
with the movement of goods by road would have been solved, adding that: “When
completed, the whole country would have been linked by rail which will address
the challenges associated with the movement of goods and services.”
