Three policemen attached to the Bariga Police Division
of the Lagos State Command have been arrested for allegedly handcuffing a man
to a power generating set at the premises of the station.
The errant policemen led by an inspector are
currently facing orderly room trial and may end up losing their jobs if found
guilty by the panel.
It was gathered that the policemen arrested a
suspect along Bariga road on July 16, 2017, and chained him to a functional
generator instead of handing him over to the station officer to collect his
statement.
Hours after he was “inhumanly” chained, he was fortunately
discovered by the divisional police officer (DPO) who was on routine inspection
tour of the division.
On sighting the suspect, the DPO made inquiries to
identify those behind the “dastardly act” and he consequently ordered for their
detention.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai
Owoseni, who confirmed the arrest, said the policemen were being tried in
accordance with the extant rules regulating the activities of policemen.
He said: "In view of the desire by the
Inspector General of Police (IG), Ibrahim Idris, to sanitise the force, the
three policemen involved in the act are being tried and adequate disciplinary
action will be taken against them at the end of the trial.
"The policemen had arrested a man for
committing an offence along Bariga road. They took him to the station where he
was handcuffed to a generator.
"The command frowns at any case of misconduct
against any of its men. Policemen are advised to operate within the ambit of
their guidelines. Anyone found wanting in the discharge of his duty will be
made to face the wrath of the law."
Owoseni, who also gave the crime statistics in the
state within the last two weeks, said about 53 armed robbery suspects as well as
12 suspected members of different notorious cult gangs were also arrested.
He said about 10 various types of guns, 13 rounds
of live ammunition and 30 vehicles were also recovered from various criminal
gangs in the metropolis.
