Three months after abandoning the legislative chamber
and suspending plenary sequel to the appearance of a snake in the hallowed chamber, a
temporary chamber was on Wednesday inaugurated for lawmakers of the Ondo State
House of Assembly.
The Assembly suspended plenary in July this year
when snake appeared in the dilapidated chamber, which caused confrontation
between the legislative and executive arms of government in the state.
At the inauguration of the temporary chamber, which
attracted Christian and Islamic clerics as well as Assembly workers, the Bishop
of Anglican Diocese of Anglican Church, Rev. Simeon Borokini emphasised on the
importance of legislature in a democratic system.
While speaking further, Borokini made an allusion
to the mace and the Covenant Box in the bible, noting that as important as the Covenant
Box is to the Israelites so is the mace to the legislative Assembly and the
people.
The clergyman admonished the lawmakers to work in
harmony with the executive arm in order to deliver the dividends of democracy
to the people.
Speaking at the occasion, the Chief Whip of the Assembly,
Hon Adeyemi Olayemi commended the state Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, for
his timely intervention through the facilitation of the renovation of the
temporary chamber.
He noted that it would further enhance the performance
of their legislative duties.
According to him, "We now have a more
convenient place to carry out our legislative duties pending the completion and
total rehabilitation of the old structure by the executive arm."
Also speaking, the Chairman of Assembly Committee
on Information, Hon Olugbenga Omole, noted that the Assembly was not in limbo as
allegedly insinuated in some quarters.
He maintained that while the renovation of the temporary
Chamber was on, members were busy with other legislative assignments such as committee
meetings and oversight functions.
Omole called on the executive to fast track the
rehabilitation of the old hallowed chamber to place it in better stead for
the performance of their legislative assignments.
