A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant,
Gideon Ikhine, has said the days of PDP being in the opposition in Edo State
would be over in 2019.
Ikhine stated this on Tuesday in an interview with journalists
at the PDP national secretariat in Abuja shortly after submitting his
governorship nomination and Expression of Interest forms.
The aspirant, who is from Edo Central, expressed
optimism that if he wins the PDP ticket, the party would reclaim power in the
state.
He said: "If you are a student of history, you
would know that when God wants to do his things, His patterns are always right.
"So I want to assure you that by the special
grace of God and by hard work and the strong will He has put in me, the days of
PDP being in the opposition in Edo State will be over this year."
Ikhine also expressed optimism that the votes of the
Edo people would count in the September 19 governorship election, adding that
PDP would win the election.
The PDP chieftain, who was fielding question on the
perception that Edo South should be allowed to complete eight years of
governorship in the state, said the PDP based on past experience opened its
ticket for every part of the state.
He recalled that within the last 12 years that PDP
lost power to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, it has fielded
two candidates from Edo South for governorship elections but lost.
"So in the wisdom of the party leaders under
the leadership of Chief Lucky Igbinedon, the party leaders met at this time and
decided that we don't need to zone it to any party of the state.
"So the governorship ticket is opened to every
part of the state so that we can get the best candidate. Like you know, I am
from the Edo Central. Central has never fielded any candidate for governorship
in the state and lost," Ikhine said.
The aspirant pledged to make Edo State the
destination of choice and self-sustenance if given the privilege to govern the
state.
