The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Commission
(FRSC), Mr. Boboye Oyeyemi, today said enforcement of the speed limiters on
commercial vehicles operating in the country will commence on October 1, 2016.
The disclosure was contained in a statement signed by
the Commission's Head of Media and Strategy, Mr. Bisi Kazeem, after a wide
consultation by an all stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja.
Oyeyemi, according to the statement, commended the
stakeholders for the support given to FRSC towards the actualisation of the
device aimed at reducing road accident on the highway.
He said: "FRSC commends all the stakeholders
for the consistent support they have given to the policy of speed limiters
usage in the country; without such support, it would have been difficult for
the country to get to where it is today where enforcement date has been finally
resolved."
The FRSC boss also commended the management of
Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and the National Automotive Design and
Development Council (NADDC) for their technical inputs in the policy, adding,
that it was such collaboration that fast tracked the decision of other
stakeholders to buy into the policy.
The initial date for the commencement of the policy,
according to the statement, was June 2015, but had to be extended to accommodate
more diverse inputs, and also because it fell into President Muhammadu Buhari's
inauguration.
The statement said: "When the Corps Marshal
made the presentation to President Buhari and suggested September 1, 2015, as
the new commencement date, the president in his magnanimity extended the date
to April 1, 2016.
"He further noted that in the process of
commencing the enforcement on the set date, a motion was passed in the National
Assembly suspending the enforcement pending when a public hearing was conducted
by the House Committee on the FRSC to determine the desirability of the
policy."
