Imo Police Command Refutes US security alert on the State

The Imo State Police Command has reacted to a the newspaper report stating that ‘United States declares Borno, Adamawa, Rivers, Imo, 16 other states unsafe’, describing as false the inclusion of Imo as one of the states with security challenges.

In a statement signed by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Andrew Enwerem, the police said the inclusion of Imo State in its latest travel advisory to its citizens as unsafe is not true of the present security situation in the state, stating that though there were some security challenges in the past which was not as bad as portrayed by the publication.

He observed that since the assumption of duty of the present state Commissioner of Police Mr. Taiwo Lakanu, 11 months ago, he had diligently and vigorously curtailed the wave of crimes in the state with the adoption of various strategies and wealth of experience in crime fighting.

“As a result of the sterling achievements recorded by the state Police Command, the immediate past Inspector-General of Police (IG), Solomon E. Arase, during his visit few weeks before his retirement, appreciated and commended the state Police Command for its successful achievements in crime fighting.

“Also, the Imo State House of Assembly had passed a vote of confidence on the police commissioner and the entire state  Police Command for their determination and concerted efforts in dealing with the crime situation in the state”, the state PPRO said.

The command noted with optimism the declaration of the American Consular-General in Nigeria, John F. Bray, when he visited the state on February 24, 2016, and during his courtesy visit to the Commissioner of Police, he specifically commended the Police Command for its great achievements in ensuring peace and stability in the state.

According to the command, it is therefore not an exaggeration that Imo State remains the hub of academic, hospitality, entertainment and tourist in the South-eastern Nigeria. It is a known fact that there is no clime without crime even in US where explosions and killings occur on a regular basis.

The command said the Imo remains one of the safest states in Nigeria where economic activities and social life are thriving without any problems, and therefore advised the people of the state and Nigerians to disregard the publication which does not reflect the true state of security affairs in the state.
