The leadership of the Academic Staff Union of
Universities (ASUU) on Monday in Kano cancelled a crucial press conference,
scheduled to hold at ASUU Secretariat, Old Campus Bayero University Kano (BUK)
to mourn Professor Kabiru Umar Mani, who was bombed by Boko Haram terrorists in a Mosque
at UNIMAID.
The National President of the ASUU, Professor
Abiodun Ogunyemi, who was already set to address the Press, suspended it in
sympathy of their colleague, Professor Kabir Umar Mani, Head of Veterinary
Medicine, University of Maiduguri, who was on Monday murdered in cold blood
when terrorists attacked a Mosque in the campus.
Professor Abiodun
disclosed that ASUU leadership had been in Kano for four days,
deliberating on the Nigerian project and Nigerian Universities.
He said the
news of the slain Professor, who was
killed in a bomb blast, alongside
four others in a Mosque at UNIMAID, informed the decision of ASUU leadership
to shelve the press briefing as a sign of respect for their deceased member.
''We got disenchanted over the sad development and
we felt that it is going to bea sign of insensitivity to go ahead with the
Press conference.''
The National president apologized to journalists who converged at
ASUU Secretariat for the emergency press briefing, assuring that it would be
held soon at another venue, which would be communicated to journalists.
