The/ University of Lagos (UNILAG) Alumni
Association has empowered five final year students of the institution with
N500, 000 to enable them start up any business of their choice.
The empowerment scheme, organised in partnership
with the student affairs division and Guaranty Trust Bank Plc., according to
the association, was to develop entrepreneurial spirit in students during their
stay on campus.
The beneficiaries included Eric Okorugbo of the
Department of Zoology and Mariam Olatunji of the Mass Communication Department
among others.
Speaking at
the award ceremony in Lagos, the association’s National President, Olorogun
Sonny Kuku, said with the empowerment project, the Alumni association
demonstrated with the gesture that life after acquisition of tertiary education
should not limited to white collar jobs, but also, identifying other viable
means of income.
The National
Publicity Secretary, Francis Shonubi, also quoted the president as imploring
government at all levels to set up more entrepreneurial schools and make
facilities available for the populace to go into small-scale businesses hence
creating jobs for themselves and bettering their lots in the long run.
