Members of the House of Representatives elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) staged a walkout on Tuesday over the defection of Nnanna Igbokwe, a lawmaker from Imo state.
Their decision was sequel to the defection of Hon. Nnanna Igbokwe from Imo State who announced his defection from the party to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Igbokwe’s defection letter to the APC was read by Yakubu Dogara, Speaker of the House, after which he granted effect to it while the PDP lawmakers started protesting and subsequently left the plenary session.
Rochas Okorocha, governor of Imo state, was also at the plenary to witness Igbokwe’s defection as the lawmaker represents Ahiazu Mbaise/Ezinihitte constituency, Imo state, in the house.
Members of the opposition party had raised several points of order including a reference to a Supreme Court judgment to stall the defection but it failed.
They had argued that the judgement barred members from leaving the party upon which they were elected to the House, saying that the consequence was to lose their seat.
But their remarks were deflated by Dogara on another provision of the 1999 constitution (as amended).
