Sokoto State Police Command on Wednesday said it had recovered 61 arms in the ongoing mop-up exercise in the state.
The state Commissioner of Police, Murtala Usman Mani, disclosed this while briefing journalists at the police headquarters, Sokoto.
He said this was in addition to the recovery of 906 rounds of AK 47 ammunition, 42 double barrel and single barrel with 1200 cartridges in the last two years.
Mani stated that the recovery was part of the arms mop- up exercise that was directed by the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris.
"The idea behind the ongoing mop -up exercise is to have a safe and crime-free society. We cannot have a crime-free society when people use these arms illegally.
"It is unfortunate that we have these ammunition that are being used illegally by some individuals. This exercise is ongoing in Sokoto and cuts across the 36 states of the Federation,"he said.
He explained that some of the arms were recovered during operations and exchange of fire between the police and bandits .
The commissioner further said some of the ammunition were surrendered voluntarily during the recent amnesty granted to some bandits in Isa local government area of Sokoto state .
"Those who embraced amnesty in Isa Local Government Area surrendered the arms on their own volition.
"In fact, some suspects escaped with bullet wounds while some are already in prison after being convicted by the courts,"he added.
