The euphoria one Uchenna Okorji had when he travelled from Enugu to Lagos to claims his winnings from Bet9ja, was terminated after he was arrested by some police officers and tagged a fraudster.
Okorji was stripped and searched and when nothing incriminating was found on him, the policemen seized his Bet9ja cheque, demanding for N750,000 ransom before he would be released.
Raising an alarm on Twitter, End SARS Convener, Segun Awosanya, said the police officers involved arrested the young man without recourse to human rights.
He said: “The organised crime syndicate of @PoliceNG is taking a deadly turn given the recalcitrance of the IGP to act. Okorji Uchenna was abducted by police officers in Lagos yesterday evening. He came from Enugu to claim the money he won from bet9ja. His phone was taken.
“He was strip searched but they didn't find anything on his phone to incriminate him. The bet9ja cheque with him was then used to summarily label him a fraud and demanded that he must pay them a ransom of N750k for him to leave alive and for his cheque to be released to him.
“They know he is not familiar with Lagos and have refused to tell him where he was whisked to. His phone is still with him as we speak because they need him to contact someone to perfect the payment of the ransom.
“This is our reality just before all Hell breaks loose in Nigeria based on this illegality endorsed and maintained by our government. This national conspiracy against the people will not be allowed to continue and drastic measures will have to be taken effective immediately.”
Upon contacting the state police spokesperson, Elkana Bala, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, to intervene, the policemen had pretended to release the victim, made him call under duress that he had been released, only to still keep him in their custody.
Awosanya who is popularly known as Segalink, added, “the officers involved must be arrested and cage raged for kidnapping asap. This is unacceptable in any sane society. Kindly ensure this is done to set the right example.
“Imagine how many people are summarily executed because they have no one to call under police oppression. Imagine how our prisons are populated daily by the innocent whose crime is being alive and having no voice. This can’t continue. Be your brother’s keeper and report.
I’m afraid the case is still on. The victim was at gun point when he told the police pro he’s been released. Apparently he was let go to fetch the ransom while his cheque was withheld with threats that he will be framed if not killed with a gun planted on his body.
“We have been trying to reach him to no avail. He is pretty shaken based on the torture and threats. We advised that he leaves the cheque with them and come straight to the state command where a team will escort him to the station to arrest the rogue officers. He is yet to comply.
“The rogue police officers are more than brazen now as we all can see. They are now a full blown terrorist organisation. While the stand-off lasts, the @PoliceNG_CRU should ensure these officers are arrested today and brought to book. This is Terrorism. #EndImpunity.”
