The Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC)
had warned traders and buyers to observe social distancing or they risk having
the markets closed down for violation of the directive.
In a statement made available to journalists on Monday, the Corps Marshal of LAGESC, Gbemisola Akinpelu, said the measure was necessary
in order to break the cycle of transmission of the virus.
According to her, "Overcrowded areas, such as
our market places, will help to increase the spread of this pandemic if social
distancing is not adhered to. This will pose great danger to the fight against
the pandemic.
"The agency will continue to intensify its
search light on all market places in the state to ensure that these directives
are strictly adhered to through aggressive advocacy campaign and sensitisation
on total compliance to the order."
She stressed
on the need for personal hygiene among members and other market users by
engaging in regular hand washing with soap and water as well as regular use of
hand sanitisers, and face masks.
