We Rescue over 12,000 Victims, Secure 325 Convictions, Says NAPTIP
DG
The Director-General of the National Agency For The
Prohibition of Trafficking In Persons (NAPTIP), Julie Okah-Donli, has said the
agency has rescued and supported over 12,000 victims and secured 325
convictions.
Okah-Donli stated this at the inauguration of the
Osogbo Command of NAPTIP today.
She said the new dimension and most frightening now
is the harvesting of organs and vital human parts for sale by traffickers.
The NAPTIP boss lamented that "nobody,
including adults, is safe, saying the inaction or self-denial will not only
accelerate the frightening dimension of this crime but also make the menace
protracted."
She said the trend of deportation of Nigerians from
different parts of the world especially in Africa in recent times is
frightening.
The DG highlighted that no fewer than 540 Nigerians
are set for deportation from Libya in three batches of 180 each this August
beginning from August 10.
She called for
the cooperation of government at all levels to halt this trend by taking
actions that would reduce vulnerability of the people to being trafficked out
or tempted to leave the country at all cost.
Okah-Donli urged all the sister law enforcement
agencies to assist the command to meet its mandate, saying no one is competing
with anyone.
In his remarks, the Governor of Osun State, Rauf
Aregbesola, who was represented by his Special Adviser on Security, Mr. Tope
Adejumo, reiterated the commitment of Aregbesola's administration to strengthen
the partnership with NAPTIP to stem the tide of human trafficking in the
country and the state in particular.
He explained that the agency and state government
have over the years enjoyed a good working relationship and more efforts would
be put to strengthen the relationship further.
