Rumours making the rounds indicated that Dr. Chidi
Onyemelukwe, daughter of Dr. Alex Ekwueme, has been nominated as the deputy
governorship candidate of the party, a running mate to Iseloka Obaze.
The PDP group Coordinator, Pastor Emma Obiorah, in a
statement made available to journalists in Awka, raised the alarm, stating that
the process will “spoil the fun for PDP in the election.”
The group said the party, after electing Obaze who
is relatively new in PDP as the candidate for the state gubernatorial election,
needs a true politicians who would be recognised at the grassroots as his
running mate.
It called on the National Working Committee (NWC),
National Executive council (NEC) and the state caretaker committee of the party
to reverse the imposition or face the wrath of the electorate.
According to
the group, “We are giving (NWC) and the state caretaker committee one week to
reverse their decision on the position of deputy, whose name had been forwarded
to the party’s NEC, and if they fail, the masses will be left with no other option than to take decision of
their own."
The group however commended the party and its
stakeholders for bringing out Obaze as its candidate, adding that he was the
only person who could win the election for PDP among the other aspirants.
They alleged that Onyemelukwe was not a card-carrying
member of the party and not known in the state, adding that she was only being
chosen because her father was influential in the party.
Fresh
Congress Group listed party members like Mr. Goddy Mbakwe from Awka South;
Chief Ndubuisi Nwobu, Awka South; Hon. Maurice Anorue Ezinifite and Emeka
Ukachukwu from Okija as those to pick as deputy to Obaze.
“We have accepted Obaze even as a new member of the
party, but we require a card-carrying member of the party to be his deputy for
the contest and who is equally known in the state, if they really want the
grassroots to support the party,” the group said.
