Sokoto State Police Command on Wednesday confirmed the killing of two persons resulting from a fracas between men of the Prisons Armed Squad and hoodlums along Sultan Abubakar road in the Sokoto metropolis.
The state Police Public Relations Officer and Assistant Superintendent of Police, Sokoto Command, Cordelia Nwiwe, said the incident occurred when some hoodlums confronted the prisons armed squad while conveying awaiting trial inmates to court.
She said the hoodlums attacked the van in an attempt to forcefully set free the awaiting trial inmates.
According to her, in an attempt to repel the attack, two miscreants lost their lives while one was injured.
She said the Command was currently investigating the matter in order to unravel the reason for the attack.
However, the Controller of Prisons, who spoke through the public relations officer of the Command, Umar Faruk, said an attack by hoodlums was foiled by men of the prisons armed squad who were escorting a vehicle conveying 18 awaiting trial inmates from Sokoto prison.
"The hoodlums armed with machetes, clubs and other dangerous weapons attempted to set free the inmates who werebeing taken to court . This was repelled as the police swiftly assisted prison warders to resist the attack thus preventing a security breach in the state," he said.
Faruk assured the public of safety of all prisoners in the Command in line with the mandate of the Nigeria Prison Service.
