A Coalition of Civil Liberty Organisations in Kano State on Tuesday has advised the embattled state Chairman of anti-corruption agency,
Muhuyi Magaji Rimin Gado, to submit himself to the police as directed by a High
court Judge in the state.
Addressing journalists on their stance on the
crisis rocking the two critical institutions in the state, the Chairman of
Voice and Accountability Platform, Isiyaku Ahmed, on behalf of the coalition,
urged both parties to sheathe their swords.
He said: “As a boss of an agency that invites
people for questioning, the chairman should be a shining example of a perfect
law officer by submitting himself before the law in this circumstance.”
A Kano High Court last Monday ordered the arrest of
Chairman, Kano State Public Complain and Anti-corruption Commission, Muhuyi
Magaji Rimigado, over an alleged contempt of the court.
The presiding Judge, Justice Muhammad Yahaya, also
ordered the AIG Zone 1 in Kano to arrest and produce Rimigado before the court
on July 18, 2018.
Accordingly, he said: “The entire situation is
uncalled for especially when it involves the sensitive institutions responsible
for the fight against corruption.
“While we also recognised the right of the court to
summon the anti-corruption chairman as a witness or defendant as the case may
be, we call on both parties to conduct themselves within the dictates of the
law."
The coalition further called for the intervention
the state executive council, the
legislators and the judiciary to treat this matter with utmost care in order not
to undermine the integrity of the anti-corruption agency of the state.
Members of the Coalition of Kano Civil Society
Organisations Against Corruption present at the briefing include Voice Against
Corruption in Nigeria; Centre for
Awareness on Justice and Accountability;
Citizen Voice Against Corruption; Voice and Accountability Platform and Kano Youth Parliament.
Others were Organisation for Community Civic
Engagement; Youth Society for the Prevention of Infectious Diseases and Social
Vices; Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre, Aminu Kano International Foundation, and
Centre for Research and Documentation.
