The Enugu State Government has denied the rumours
making the rounds that it plans to ban the operation of tricycles in the state
popularly known as ‘Keke’ after the 2019 general election, stating that “there
is no iota of truth in it.”
In a statement by the state Commissioner for
Transport, Hon. Vitus Okechi, on Thursday the state government described the allegation as
“false and baseless,” stressing that “there is no such plan.”
The commissioner disclosed that “the state government
has implicit confidence in the leadership and membership of the Association of
Tricycle Riders Transport Union in Enugu State,” adding that it “has continued
to enjoy a cordial working relationship with them as partners in the
development of the state.”
The government, therefore, stated that it would empower
the tricycle operators more “after the 2019 general election in line with the
policy thrust of the administration,” and urged “the public to discountenance
the said rumours as there is no iota of truth in it.
Meanwhile, the Edo State Government has directed
operators of tricycles (Keke), who ply unapproved routes to return their
business to the roads and streets approved for them by the state government.
Special Adviser to the Edo State Governor on Media and
Communication Strategy, Crusoe Osagie, who spoke to journalists in Benin-city,
the state capital, on Thursday, said: "The state government observed that
some tricycle operators carry out their business in restricted areas and on
major roads, thereby contravening government's policy on where these tricycles
should operate.
Osagie said: "The state government frowns at the
flagrant disregard for laid down rules and policies and warned that further
violations will be met with severe sanctions."
He therefore urged tricycle (Keke) operators to
conduct their business in areas approved for them by the government.
