The federal government has commenced a nationwide Annual
School Census (ASC) exercise designed to generate reliable and timely basic and
post-basic education data from schools.
It stated that it would aid in proper planning,
management and administration of the education sector, for enhanced learning
and productivity.
Flagging off the exercise, with the theme: ‘Mobile
Technology: A Veritable Tool for Enhancing the Generation, Reliable and Timely
Education Data’ in Abuja on Wednesday,
the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, noted that this year’s data
would be generated using an Android tablet, to explore the maximum use of
mobile technology.
"I call on all stakeholders especially head
teachers and principals who are custodians of school records and the main
drivers of the process to accurately complete the Annual School Census forms
using the mobile technology.
"I hope we will leverage on the series of
trainings on school records-keeping for head teachers and principals organised
by the Federal Ministry of Education and UNICEF in states and FCT in previous
years, to gather timely and reliable education data.
"We conducted geo-positioning of schools in some
states which will help in getting the exact number of schools which will
invariably validate the ASC data.
Schools in Imo, Edo, Ondo, Kogi, and Taraba
States at both basic and post basic levels have ready been mapped and placed in
the website for accessibility by all. The basic schools have been mapped by the
personnel audit exercise. We hope all the states will key into this exercise so
as to map the remaining post basic schools," he said.
