Notable Igbo political leaders, including Governor of
Anambra State, Willie Obiano; Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu; former
Governor of Enugu State, Chimaroke Nnamani; Senator Chuka Utazi, Sen Obinna
Ogba, House of Representatives member, Nkiru Onyejeocha, among several others
yesterday escaped death by whiskers.
The Igbo leaders who were on board an Air Peace passenger
flight survived what would have become a black-Monday as their flight which
took off from Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu made an emergency
landing 15 minutes after takeoff.
The Abuja-bound flight was scheduled for 8.45am.
They were returning to Abuja after attending Ekweremadu's
birthday ceremony held in Enugu on Sunday.
A source at the airport who refused to be quoted said the
development was due to a "bird strike"which occurred at the airport.
He stated that the birds entered the engines of the plane
and was only "noticed when the flight had taken off, forcing the pilot to
make emergency landing".
The source said five blades of the aircraft were condemned,
adding that all the passengers were forced out of the flight after the
emergency landing.
He said that it took another one hour for another flight to
be provided that lifted the passengers to Abuja at about 11.30am.
