The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Monday distributed farm inputs to 26,000 farmers in Borno State.
This is aimed at building the economy of
communities affected by Boko Haram crisis in the troubled state.
Speaking at the distribution of the inputs in
Maiduguri, the Economy Security Delegate of the ICRC, Cadassou Samuel, noted
that the organisation, having evaluated the destruction caused by Boko Haram
terrorists in both farmlands and livelihoods of the citizens, embarked on the
exercise to enable them produce food for their households.
Samuel disclosed that in Monguno Local Government Area,
16,000 farmers benefited from the distribution, while in Jere and Maiduguri
Metropolitan Council, 10,000 farmers benefited from the exercise.
He said the farm inputs distributed to the farmers
included rice, cowpea, maize, millet and sorghum seeds in addition to provision
of farm tools to them.
According to him, "We also distributed food
items such as rice, beans and oil to the farmers. ICRC did to protect the
farmers from eating up the farm seeds distributed to them for cultivation.”
He revealed that the exercise would be extended to
other local government areas of the state as the farming season approaches.
