The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odijie-Oyegun, on Monday said by electing Senator Ahmed Lawan as its Majority Leader, Senate has acknowledged the supremacy of the party.

He added that although the crisis that beset the ruling party shortly after the inauguration of the eighth Senate was regrettable, what  is important is that the APC caucus in the Senate is now a united body.

In the same vein, the leadership of the APC Senate caucus led by the newly elected Senate Majority Leader, Senator Lawan, has said there was no truth in the report that they are planning to impeach the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekwerenmadu.

Speaking while receiving the leadership of the APC Senate caucus at the party's national secretariat in Abuja, Oyegun said with the development at the Senate, party members in the upper legislative chamber have now become a united house.
"What is right, is what is right and it is now clear that the authority and the supremacy of the party have finally been recognised, which is a critical ingredient to the smooth function of the apparatus of governance. With the action of our partners in the Senate, there is now clear and full reconciliation between the National Assembly and the party. It is also clear that given the fact that we are a party of change, certain principles must be observed," he said.

However, Oyegun expressed kind words for former Senate Leader, Senate Ali Ndume, saying his removal was not as a result of any misdeed, but that he was made to sacrifice his position for peace to reign.

"It is important to mention that the former Senate Leader was not removed as a result of any misdeed on his part or loss of confidence of his colleagues, but as a result of a necessary act of sacrifice that had to be done to reunite the Senate.
"We appreciate the service that he rendered to the Senate and the sacrifice that he has made which are necessary for the National Assembly, the party and the country to move forward," he said.

The ruling party national chairman said the party would give you all the support and will work together and ensure that all the necessary things are done to move the nation forward.

On his part, Lawan pledged to work to sustain harmonious relationship between the party, the National Assembly and the executive arm of government in the coming months.

He said with current unity in the Senate, the party caucus would soon meet with President Muhammadu Buhari and the national leadership of the party to device more effective ways of improving service delivery to Nigerians.

"My election is in compliance with party supremacy which has been expressed by our party and the president, and the significance is unity and stability of the APC in the Senate. Of course, this would translate, by the grace of God, to better productivity for our government.
"We see this as a midterm opportunity for the party, having realised this at a very critical point in 2017, which is a crucial year; whereas as a party in government, we must take this opportunity to maintain and sustain the tempo and momentum of performance so that we can continue to sustain progress in government to deliver services to Nigeria," he said.
