Two UNILAG Students Bag First Class with Perfect Scores of 5.0


University of Lagos has produced two first class students from the department of Cell Biology and Genetics, Faculty of Science and department of Systems Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, with perfect score of 5.0.
The female students, Miss Taiwo Bankole  and Oyindamola Omotuyi, with the highest Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) are part of the 231 graduating  students who passed in the First Class Division in the institution 2015/ 2016 convocation ceremonies, the 49th in the series.

The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Rahamon Ade-Bello, who gave a statistics of the graduating students to journalists, today, said a total of 12,617 will receive their degrees, diplomas and certificates during this year’s convocation, adding that out of this figure, 6, 900 (54.7 percent) will receive first degrees or diplomas while  5, 717 (45.3 percent), will receive post graduate degrees.
“Out of the first degree graduating students , Faculty of Engineering topped the list with 46 first class graduating students; 1705 passed out in the second class upper division; 2,972 are in the second class lower division; 1, 372 in third Class; 103 with pass degree while 517 have degrees or diplomas that are not classified,” he said.

The VC  added that 5, 420 would also receive master’s degrees in the various fields across the institution, while a total of 95 students would receive  the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in various disciplines.


The three-day convocation ceremonies, he said, would kick off on January 23 with the unveiling of new names for its infrastructure to honour all past vice chancellors of the institutions, who are not serving and who have not been honoured so far for their contributions to the growth of the university to its enviable position.

According to him, “The governing council of the university ratified the senate’s proposition as follows: the Main Auditorium renamed J.F Ajayi Auditorium; the Second Access Road, now to be renamed Akinpelu Adesola Road; the Radiography Hostel renamed Kwaku Adadevoh Hostel; DLI Auditorium renamed Nurudeen Alao Auditorium; Multipurpose Halls renamed Jelili Adebisi Omotola Hall while the staff School Hall will be renamed Tolulope Odugbemi Hall.”

The unveiling of the new names, the VC said, would be followed by a convocation lecture titled: ‘Building a Successor-Generation: Reflections on Values and Knowledge in Nation Building’, which will be delivered by the Minister of Solid Minerals, Dr. Kayode Fayemi; while Major General Ike Nwachukwu (rtd) is expected to chair the programme.

The ceremony will climax on January 26, with the graduation of the School of Postgraduate Studies as well as honorary doctoral degree on three eminent Nigerians-His Eminence, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbi El-Kanemi, the Shehu of Borno (Honoris Causa) Public Administration; Professor John Pepper Clark(Honors Causa) and Professor Ayodele Francis Ogunye(Honoris Causa) Engineering.

 “In addition, Professor Osato Frank Giwa-Osagie will be honoured with Emeritus Professorship of the institution, while four professors-Babajide Ibitayo Alo, Olukayode Amund, Cecilia Ihuoma Igwilo, Jim Ijenwa Unah-will become distinguished professors,” Ade-Bello stated.
