Okonjo-Iweala Reveals How Jonathan Reacted To Chibok Girls’ Abduction

Former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on Sunday revealed how former President Goodluck Jonathan reacted to the kidnap of the Chibok schoolgirls, saying contrary to claims of negligence, Jonathan was concerned.
Okonjo-Iweala described Jonathan’s reaction to the incident in her yet to be released book titled ‘Fighting Corruption is Dangerous –The Story Behind the Headlines’. 
It would be recalled that Jonathan was accused by the then opposition of not acting promptly following the kidnap of over 200 hundred girls from Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno state, in April 2014.
But Okonjo-Iweala was quoted as saying that Jonathan called her on the phone while she was in Mexico, a day after the abduction.
“When the President came to the phone, he sounded tired. It was easy to sense the fatigue in his voice,” Okonjo-Iweala wrote.
“I told him what I had heard in Mexico and the reaction of the participants.
“The President confirmed that the kidnapping had happened, that they were still trying to determine with the state authorities exactly what happened, and that the total number of girls taken was still not known.”
Okonjo-Iweala quoted Jonathan as saying: “CME, we must get those girls out alive. I don’t care what they say about me. But I don’t want those girls dead. We must get them back alive.”

Population of Doctors in Nigeria Hits 74,543

  The number of registered medical doctors in Nigeria has risen to 74,543. According to the federal government statistics, as at 2018, the stock of professionally regulated health workers in Nigeria health sector has also recorded a significant increase. The population equates to 36.3 percent of medical doctors per 100,000 population (doctor to population ratio of 1: 2753). Fifty-nine percent of the registered medical practitioners were in good standing with 35 percent being females. UBEC Board Chairman, Daughter Freed from Captivity

The Board Chairman of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Dr. Muhammed Mahmoud, and his daughter were on Tuesday released by their abductors. Mahmoud, his daughter and several other travellers were abducted last Monday on the Kaduna-Abuja expressway when suspected bandits open fire at them. The UBEC boss’ driver was said to have been killed during the incident. There has been no information about other commuters who were abducted by the bandits. Mahmood's freedom was confirmed in a telephone interview by Hussaini Danladi, a relation, who said they were freed from captivity at about noon yesterday. Danladi, however, did not say whether a ransom was paid before their release.
