The Bayelsa State Government on Tuesday accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state of plotting to prevent President Muhammadu Buhari from inaugurating the Bayelsa International Airport.

A statement by the state Governor, Seriake Dickson's Special Adviser on Media and Public Relations, Mr. Fidelis Soriwei, said the APC was attempting to demonise the airport for political considerations.

The state government therefore urged President Buhari and his handlers to be wary of the unpatriotic and destructive intent of a few disgruntled characters masquerading as critics of government.

“It has come to the attention of the Bayelsa State Government that the state APC which is enraged by their recent political misfortune is planning to prevent President Buhari from inaugurating the airport for campaign purposes.

“The essence of venturing into politics cannot be the selfish promotion of the inordinate and parochial interest of a selfish few to destroy the general good by a few disgruntled political characters masquerading as critics of government.

“It is sad that the APC in Bayelsa State has thrown caution to the wind by portraying themselves as enemies of the Bayelsa people and indeed the Ijaw nation," the state government said.

Dickson added that the obsession to demonise everything with the intent to harm the public good cannot do the APC any good.

The APC had accused the state government of lacking answers and trying to divert attention from “serious issues of accountability, due process and democratic governance” regarding the state airport project.

In a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Doifie Buokoribo, APC had described the airport project as a fraud.

It alleged: "We noted that at more than N80 billion, it is grossly inflated.

“Rather than address the concerns we raised, the governor, through his Information Commissioner, chose to abuse our party and its leaders, especially Chief Timipre Sylva."
