Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) have confirmed that no live was lost in the fire outbreak which occurred at the popular Mile 12 market in Lagos State.

It also revealed that it had successfully recovered an articulated truck which fell across the road in Agric area of Ikorodu in the state.

The fire, which broke out at about 6a.m. on Thursday, was attributed to a power surge from the public power supply facility when power was restored in the market.

It, however, destroyed goods and properties in five of the shops operated by three owners in the market.

In a statement issued by LASEMA Head of Public Affairs, Boss Okunbor, he revealed that the fire was put out at exactly 7:47a.m. before it could destroy more properties.

According to him, "Earlier today (yesterday), the foodstuff market at Mile 12 experienced a fire outbreak which was promptly put out eventually by the LASEMA response team in collaboration with the Lagos State Fire Service.

"The fire outbreak, which destroyed raw food when it broke out from one of the shops in the market, was attributed to power surge from the public power supply facility when power was restored in the market.

"According to the situation report regarding the fire outbreak, on arrival at the incident scene, the LASEMA response team discovered that the fire emanated from one of the destroyed shops.

"The Mile 12 market fire, which started earlier today (yesterday) and was completely put out at about 7:47a.m., recorded no loss of life nor injury, however, five shops operated by three owners were destroyed by the inferno.

"The main cause of the fire-power surge- was isolated and disconnected with the aim of averting a secondary incident."

The statement also revealed that prior to the Mile 12 market fire operation, another LASEMA response team recovered an articulated truck which suffered a mechanical problem and broke down at Agric area of Ikorodu.

It said: “The LRT discovered that the truck with registration number LND 525 XE conveying a 40 feet container developed a mechanical fault (brake failure) while trying to ascend the Oke Riya hill inward Agric bus stop.

"Subsequently, after the vehicle's brake failed in its attempt to ascend the hill, the truck rammed into a road barricade, thereby constituting an obstruction to free flow of vehicular traffic in the process, as no live was lost nor injuries sustained at the scene of the incident.

"The affected truck was removed from the barricade with the use of the agency's heavy duty equipment (Super metro) and handed over to the available police officers to set the road free for normal vehicular and human activities."
