Ekweremadu, Others Back Egypt’s Peace Initiative in Libya

Former Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, has joined his colleagues in the International Parliament for Tolerance and Peace (IPTP) to back Egypt’s initiative for peace in Libya. This was made known in a statement issued at the weekend by the Speaker of the IPTP, who is also a member of the National Parliament of Argentina, Hon. Walberto Enrique Allende. The IPTP's decision on Libya was sequel to a virtual emergency session of the Bureau of the Parliament attended by the Speaker and Heads of Committees of the 70-member specialised parliament, including the former Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate and Speaker of the Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament, Ike Ekweremadu, who chairs the Committee on legal and Legislative Affairs. Allende said IPTP’s support for Egypt’s efforts was because the Peace Initiative envisages “an immediate ceasefire in Libya, respecting the integrity and independence of Libya and withdrawing all foreign forces and fighters; returning to the peace negotiations under the auspices of the United Nations, which will be concluded with a comprehensive political solution to end the Libyan crisis in line with the outcomes of the Berlin Conference; holding the presidential council elections under the supervision of the UN, and establishing constitutional provisions for organising the elections for a later stage, as well as supporting the appropriate Libyan national dialogue mechanism with international efforts and assistance to strengthen local institutions.” The statement further observed that Egypt’s Initiative for Peace in Libya had equally gained the support of key international organisations and states around the world as vital to achieving the common national interest of the Libyan people "and stopping the bloodshed in order to pave the way for building the independence and prosperity of all citizens of Libya. “Based on IPTP mission to jointly tackle the issues, which have a high impact on the international peace and security, we invite all the relevant stakeholders, our national parliaments, and the international community to support the Egyptian Peace Initiative for Libya that envisages.”

Population of Doctors in Nigeria Hits 74,543

  The number of registered medical doctors in Nigeria has risen to 74,543. According to the federal government statistics, as at 2018, the stock of professionally regulated health workers in Nigeria health sector has also recorded a significant increase. The population equates to 36.3 percent of medical doctors per 100,000 population (doctor to population ratio of 1: 2753). Fifty-nine percent of the registered medical practitioners were in good standing with 35 percent being females. UBEC Board Chairman, Daughter Freed from Captivity

The Board Chairman of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Dr. Muhammed Mahmoud, and his daughter were on Tuesday released by their abductors. Mahmoud, his daughter and several other travellers were abducted last Monday on the Kaduna-Abuja expressway when suspected bandits open fire at them. The UBEC boss’ driver was said to have been killed during the incident. There has been no information about other commuters who were abducted by the bandits. Mahmood's freedom was confirmed in a telephone interview by Hussaini Danladi, a relation, who said they were freed from captivity at about noon yesterday. Danladi, however, did not say whether a ransom was paid before their release.
