Group Mounts Pressure on Buhari to Appoint Easterner
as Police IG
The Association of United Igbo Gospels Minister
(AUIGM) and Rehemi Foundation at the weekend mounted pressure on President
Muhammadu Buhari to appoint an Igbo man as the Inspector General of Police (IG).
The call came as the tenure of the current IG,
Solomon Arase, ends next month.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja, AUIGM President, Air Vice
Marshal Robert Konye Ekezie (rtd), said the need to appoint an Igbo man as the
IG has become imperative given the perceived marginalisation of the Igbos in
the Buhari's administration.
He stated that: "The president as number one
citizen should treat every Nigerian, irrespective of tribe and religion, as his
children with the same responsibility to all."
Ekezie explained that since the "president
appointed the Service Chiefs without considering Ndigbo. Ministerial positions
are constitutional rights, and there was no way to exclude the Igbos.
"Now is the time to right the wrong, as the
tenure of the present indefatigable IG, Arase, comes to an end in June, an Igbo
man should be considered," he said.
He argued that the appointment of an Igbo as IGP
will automatically fill the vacuum as no indigene of the South-east
geo-political zone, made up of Abia, Anambra, Enonyi, Enugu and Imo States is
currently represented at the National Defence Council.
Ekezie further urged Nigerians to disabuse their
minds and embrace Ndigbo, adding that statements like 'an Igbo man cannot
become president' should be discarded.
Also speaking, President of Igbo Women Assembly, Bishop
Junita Chinwendu, called on Nigerians to shade off division and embrace peace
as the only to foster sustainable development.
