Gunmen last Saturday attacked the residence of a former Inspector General of Police (IG), Ibrahim Coomasie, in Katsina, killing a mobile policeman, injuring another.
The attack was carried out by two attackers on a motorcycle who opened fire on the two policemen stationed at the gate of the residence at the about 8pm, but did not gain entrance into the house.
The attackers were however said to have escaped with the rifle of one of the policemen but the former IGP and his family members were safe.
The corpse of the policeman has been deposited at the mortuary of Katsina General Hospital, where the other injured mobile policeman was receiving treatment.
Meanwhile, Governor Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina State has commiserated with Commassie even as he condemned last night's fatal attack on his Katsina GRA residence by unidentified gunmen, which led to the death of a police officer with another one seriously injured.
In a statement signed by his media aide, Abdu Labaran Malumfashi and made available to the media in Katsina on Sunday, Masari described the attack as dastardly, callous and cowardly, vowing that all those behind this targeted attack would be fished out and punished accordingly.
Commiserating with the former IG and Chairman of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) on behalf of the government and people of Katsina State, the governor lamented that targeting a respected elder statesman who has served, and is still serving the nation with distinction with criminal intentions could only be the product of evil minds, the kind that the society would be better off without.
He charged the security agencies to spare no efforts in flushing out the perpetrators of this heinous crime and their sponsors, assuring that anybody found complicit in the crime would be dealt with in accordance with the provisions of the law without regard to who they may be.
The governor declared that his administration would not tolerate the violent breach of the peace that has been achieved in the state with the advent the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.
He stated that both the federal and state governments would do everything possible to not only ensure the capture of the attackers, but also prevent the recurrence of such heinous crime in the state.
