Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mallam Adamu Ciroma, has died.
Ciroma, who died on Thursday afternoon at a Turkish hospital at aged 83, was born November 20, 1934, late Ciroma also served as Minister of Finance in the government of President Olusegun Obasanjo from 1999 to 2003.
He was briefly the secretary of the defunct National Party of Nigeria, (NPN) and he later served at various times as Minister for Industries, Agriculture and Finance.
In September 1983, he was made the chairman of a presidential transition committee, which further demonstrated the trust the then president had in his capabilities.
Ciroma of late kept out of the public eye despite the active participation of his wife, Hayiya Maryam Ciroma in the affairs of the PDP.
Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari on Thurday in Abuja said he received with sadness, the news of the passing of Ciroma.
In a statement, Mr. Femi Adesina, the president's spokesman, said: "Buhari on behalf of himself, the Federal Government and all Nigerians, the President extends sincere condolences to the Ciroma family, the government and people of Yobe State on the passing of the elder statesman."
The statement said the president believed that Ciroma as a political leader and a one-time Minister for Industries, Agriculture and Finance, at various points in his remarkable life, would be long remembered for his remarkable service and dedication to the country’s unity, progress and stability.
"President Buhari also affirms that the late former CBN Governor will be honoured too for his contributions in promoting democracy in Nigeria and his legacies should be a constant reminder to politicians who wish to work for the good of their communities and our great country.
"The President prays that Almighty Allah will grant Malam Ciroma eternal rest and comfort the elder statesman’s family, relatives, friends and associates," the statement added.
