Red Cross Distances Self from Alleged Diversion of N34m Katsina IDPs' Fund

The Katsina State branch of the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) has distance itself from allegations making the around that the Society and other non-governmental organisations have collected the sum of N34 million from a philanthropist on behalf of the Internally  Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the state.



The humanitarian organisation made its position known in a statement signed by it Secretary, Bala Abdullahi Hussaini, and made available to journalists in Katsina on Monday.



The state in recent times has faced series of deadly attacks in eight local government areas of Batsari, Safana, Dandume, Kankara, Danmusa, Faskari, Jibia and Musawa.


The onslaught on the affected local government areas by armed had led to the death of more the 60 people and rendered no fewer than 33,130 persons homeless, according to the recent statistics released by the state Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).



Hussaini in the statement said NRCS, as a humanitarian organisation working in the state to cater for the welfare of those in need, would never collect donation in cash or kind from any organisation or individual on behalf of IDPs.

According to him, "The Nigerian Red Cross Society in Katsina State wishes to call the attention of the public that as a humanitarian organisation working in the interest of those in need in the state and auxiliary to public authorities, it had at no time in the past or present requested or collected any donation or support in cash or kind from any organisation or individual on behalf of IDPs in the state.



"Information going around in the public had it that the sum of N34 million donated to the IDPs by a philanthropist in the state was entrusted in the hands of some organisations, which the name of Red Cross was mentioned."



While urging the public to disregard the allegation, Hussaini said: "The Society wishes to distance itself from such information and the donation said to have been given to the organisation on behalf of the IDPs."
