The Coalition of Niger Delta Leaders has rejected President Muhammadu Buhar's appointment of an outsider to head the Caretaker Committee of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP) on Niger Delta.

The group, in a three-point communique issued at the end of a consultative meeting at the palace of the Paramount Ruler of Okochiri in Okirika Local Government Area of Rivers State, King Ateke Tom, urged Buhari to immediately appoint somebody from Niger Delta to head the Amnesty Committee.

Reading the communique on behalf of the group, T.K. Ogoriba said it was unacceptable for the President to appoint somebody from outside the Niger Delta to head a committee that would superintend over youths from the region.

The communique read: "The meeting condemned in totality the appointment of non-Niger Deltan to head the affairs of the Presidential Amnesty Programme.

"The arrangement is unacceptable and should be reversed immediately with the appointment of a critical stakeholder from the region grounded in the Niger Delta affairs."

The coalition also lamented the invasion of some Niger Delta communities by killer herdsmen, giving its full support to the decision of South-south governors on regional security.

He said: "We object to any invasion of our lands and communities by migrant herdsmen.  As a result, we frown at the killings of our sons and daughters at Uvwerehu and Abaraka in Delta state and Oben in Edo state and other states of the region.

"We support the position of our governors on the issues of security. We are urging them not to relent in their efforts to keep the region safe and secured."
