NAPTIP Rescues 100 Victims of Human Trafficking,
Arrest 20 Suspects
The National Agency for the Prohibition of
Trafficking in Persons and other Related Offences (NAPTIP), Sokoto Zonal
Command, today announced that it had rescued more than 100 victims of human
trafficking and arrested 20 suspects from January to date.
According to the Zonal Commander, Hassan
Tahir, who disclosed this to some journalists in Sokoto, the agency secured
four convictions within this period with some cases still pending in court.
"We made a history as for the
first time, as we secured three conviction in one single day, making it four
conviction within the month of May. We are hoping the number will increase
before the year runs out," he said.
He explained that NAPTIP in
collaboration with the United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime Control
(UNODC) and WOTCLEF trained and supported four victims with fund to start
businesses in the zone.
He commended the National Assembly
for repealing NAPTIP act which now stipulates severe punishment for
traffickers.
"This was why some
traffickers were sentenced to few months imprisonment but the punishment is
from five years and above," he explained.
He decried lack of cooperation from
the public and witnesses as well as inadequate funding which he said hindered
their operations in the zone.
