Contrary to the position of President Muhammadu
Buhari that the recent attacks by Boko Haram are the "last kicks of a
dying horse," former Senate Leader, Senator Ali Ndume, has said insurgency
has resurfaced in three North-east states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa.
Speaking at plenary on Tuesday, Ndume who recently
returned from a six month suspension slammed on him by the Senate, raised the
issue of heightening insecurity in the region.
He sought the leave of the Senate to present the
matter as a motion of urgent importance on the next legislative day as is the
practice.
"It is basically on the state of security in
Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States. You will recall or maybe you have read that the
insurgency issue in the North-east, particularly in those states that I have mentioned,
is resurfacing again.
"There is the need for us at this critical time to invite
the security chiefs to hear from them if there is anything we can do to address
these ugly incidents, so that we should do it," he said.
The senator added that the security chiefs should
appear at a closed-door session at plenary to brief the lawmakers on the
happenings in the region and how they intend to end insurgency.
Buhari at a recent event in Yola where he was
represented by the Minister of Information, Mr. Lai Mohammed, said Boko Haram has
been degraded.
“Instead of being hunters, they are now the hunted.
What we are witnessing now are the last kicks of a dying horse.
A dying
horse manages to engage in some kicks. These kicks may be dangerous, but they
don’t last long.
Progressively, they become weaker and weaker until
the horse finally gives up," Mohammed had said.
