Nigeria Suspends SEC DG, 2 Others As Investigations Into Graft Allegations Begin

The Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Mr. Mounir Gwarzo, and two others have been suspended from office by the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, as the federal government launches investigation into several allegations of financial impropriety leveled against the top official.
A statement signed by Deputy Director, Press, Federal Ministry of Finance, Patricia Deworitshe, on Wednesday announced the development.
According to the statement, the suspension is in line with the Public Service Rules (PSRs) 03405 and 03406.
The statement said: “The Minister has set up an Administrative Panel of Inquiry (API) to investigate and determine the culpability of the Director-General.
“She has directed the suspended SEC Director-General to immediately hand over to the most senior officer at the Commission, pending the conclusion of the investigation by the API.
“Also suspended are two management staff of the Commission – Mr. Abdulsalam Naif Habu, Head of Media Division and Mrs. Anastasia Omozele Braimoh, Head of Legal Department – who have been alleged to engage in financial impropriety in the Commission.”

Population of Doctors in Nigeria Hits 74,543

  The number of registered medical doctors in Nigeria has risen to 74,543. According to the federal government statistics, as at 2018, the stock of professionally regulated health workers in Nigeria health sector has also recorded a significant increase. The population equates to 36.3 percent of medical doctors per 100,000 population (doctor to population ratio of 1: 2753). Fifty-nine percent of the registered medical practitioners were in good standing with 35 percent being females. UBEC Board Chairman, Daughter Freed from Captivity

The Board Chairman of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Dr. Muhammed Mahmoud, and his daughter were on Tuesday released by their abductors. Mahmoud, his daughter and several other travellers were abducted last Monday on the Kaduna-Abuja expressway when suspected bandits open fire at them. The UBEC boss’ driver was said to have been killed during the incident. There has been no information about other commuters who were abducted by the bandits. Mahmood's freedom was confirmed in a telephone interview by Hussaini Danladi, a relation, who said they were freed from captivity at about noon yesterday. Danladi, however, did not say whether a ransom was paid before their release.
