Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential
candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, will on Monday arrive in Akure, the Ondo State
capital, for a mega rally billed to attract no fewer than 20,000 party
loyalists and other members of the public.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the state
Head of Media and Publicity, Atiku/Obi Campaign Organisation, Kayode Fasua, those
to accompany Atiku to the state rally are his running mate and former Anambra
State governor, Mr. Peter Obi; the National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche
Secondus; other members of the PDP national and state working committees, the
Director General of Atiku/Obi Campaign Organisation in Ondo State, Mr Eyitayo
Jegede (SAN), and other party leaders.
The presidential candidate is also expected to pay
homage to the Akure monarch, the Deji, His Royal Majesty, Oba Aladetoyinbo
Aladelusi, and his chiefs.
Atiku’s visit to the state is however coming four
days after hoodlums suspected to be loyalists of the All Progressives Congress
(APC) attacked the Atiku/Obi Campaign Organisation’s office in Akure, in which
the office guard was brutalised while Atiku’s billboards and posters were
destroyed.
The campaign organisation has therefore appealed to
the police and other law enforcement agencies in the state to ensure a
level-playing ground for Atiku’s supporters by enforcing law and order
throughout the visit.
Besides, the organisation seeks the enforcement of police warning, which was recently given to
those who always use the name of National Union of Road Transport Workers
(NURTW) to foment trouble at political rallies “as Atiku and his team are peace
lovers.”
Meanwhile, Akure has become a beehive of activities
as party loyalists from the 18 local government areas have been bombarding the
city, thus boosting business for hotels which are all virtually booked ahead of
tomorrow’s visit of the former vice-president.
