The Action Democratic Party (ADP) has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to revisit the fuel subsidy regime and pay at the pump point in order to eliminate middle men in the sector, even as it advised the president to sign thee Electoral Acts (amendment) bill for improved elections.
The party also asked the president to replace the current Service chiefs to improve the nation’s current security situation.
The party’s positions were made at the end of its 16th National Working Committee (NWC) meeting which took place at its national secretariat in Abuja.
The National Chairman, Mr. Yabagi Sani, who addressed journalists after the NWC meeting, said it was necessary for the party to let the Buhari government know what needed to be done.
"The time has come for the Buhari government to revisit the subsidy regime. We know that the subsidy is fraudulently managed and therefore Nigerians are not getting value for money. Although we will ask the president to totally remove the subsidy from petroleum product that is consumed locally because of its implications.
”In terms of inflation, socio-economic implication to Nigerians, what we are asking the government to do is to look at the regulatory agencies because we know that in the oil and gas sector there is a defect in the governance.
"We believe if meters are installed, for instance, at our inlet jetties, you can effectively account for what comes in as product for subsidy to be paid on. We know as a matter of fact, that most of the jetties in this nation today do not have working meters, so what subsidy should be paid on? What government is paying subsidy on today is fake data.
"What we are asking President Buhari to do is to pay subsidy at the pumps that are at the petrol stations to eliminate middle men. The filling station owners should be the ones submitting data from their sales, so that government will not be paying middlemen but will be paying for actual consumption by Nigerians
He also said that that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should take over the conduct of local government elections, adding that what is currently happening is not election but appointment by the state governors
He also asked the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele to stop dabbling into politics and restrict himself to monetary policies that would strengthen the Naira and curb inflation
The ADP chairman noted that insecurity is the major problem facing the country and advised the president to replace the current Service Chiefs.
On the Ruga controversy, he said the party was in support of the initiative, adding that it is a socio economic solution to the farmers-herders clashes which have engulfed Nigeria. He, however advised Buhari to be more holistic in the implementation process such that the plight of farmers is adequately considered.
"Ruga" settlement or ranching is as old as Nigeria. The growing suspicion and rejection of the policy by Nigerians is a result of loss of confidence in the ability, capacity and sincerity of the Buhari administration who has allowed the problem to linger.
’It will be recalled that in the year 2015, Nigerians voted en masse for President Muhammadu Buhari who, being a former head of state, retired military general, Fulani and Muslim from the North, personifies the solution to the Boko Haram security challenges during the Jonathan administration," he said.
