The Katsina State branch of the Nigerian Red Cross
Society (NRCS) has distance itself from allegations making the around that the
Society and other non-governmental organisations have collected the sum of N34
million from a philanthropist on behalf of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the state.
The humanitarian organisation made its position
known in a statement signed by it Secretary, Bala Abdullahi Hussaini, and made
available to journalists in Katsina on Monday.
The state in recent times has faced series of
deadly attacks in eight local government areas of Batsari, Safana, Dandume,
Kankara, Danmusa, Faskari, Jibia and Musawa.
The onslaught on the affected local government
areas by armed had led to the death of more the 60 people and rendered no fewer
than 33,130 persons homeless, according to the recent statistics released by
the state Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).
Hussaini in the statement said NRCS, as a
humanitarian organisation working in the state to cater for the welfare of
those in need, would never collect donation in cash or kind from any organisation
or individual on behalf of IDPs.
According to him, "The Nigerian Red Cross
Society in Katsina State wishes to call the attention of the public that as a
humanitarian organisation working in the interest of those in need in the state
and auxiliary to public authorities, it had at no time in the past or present
requested or collected any donation or support in cash or kind from any organisation
or individual on behalf of IDPs in the state.
"Information going around in the public had it
that the sum of N34 million donated to the IDPs by a philanthropist in the state
was entrusted in the hands of some organisations, which the name of Red Cross
was mentioned."
While urging the public to disregard the
allegation, Hussaini said: "The Society wishes to distance itself from
such information and the donation said to have been given to the organisation
on behalf of the IDPs."
