The apex Igbo Socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo,
on Tuesday applauded the Nigerian Senate for calling for the immediate
convocation of a National Security Summit with a view to addressing the myriads
of security challenges facing the country.
The organisation President General, Chief John Nnia Nwodo,
told journalists in Enugu that the security challenge plaguing the country had
no regards for anybody and as such demands the collective action of all
stakeholders.
The organization called on all eminent leaders of the nation
to regardless of their political persuasion, come together in an urgent
National Security Conference to discuss measures that will arrest the extant
drift to lawlessness.
“Once again I am happy that the Senate of the Federal
Republic of Nigeria has seen what we have long been talking about. A few days
ago, following the dastardly murder of the daughter of the Afenifere leader Pa
Reuben Fasoranti, we at the Ohanaeze called for the immediate convocation of a
National Security Summit.
“Yesterday, former President Olusegun Obasanjo also called
for a National Conference. Today, the Senate has joined the call. It’s now left
for President Muhammadu Buhari to do the needful by doing what everybody
desires at this critical point in the nation’s history.
“It’s indeed a challenging moment and we all have to rise to
the occasion before this situation degenerates out of hand,” Nwodo noted.
