Police fired shots into the air to disperse scores of
protesting members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) gathered around to
the popular Banex Plaza to continue their protest against the prolonged
incarceration of their leader, El-Zakzaky.
Following the development, the Police have also resumed a
24-hour surveillance of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as their patrol
vehicles were mounted in strategic parts of the nation’s capital while on
intensive search of the locations of the Shiite protesters in order to contain further
violent demonstrations.
Monday's protest by the group, who belong to the Shiite
Islamic Sect and the subsequent clash with the police claimed the lives of a
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Umar Usman and a Channels Television
reporter, Precious Owolabi and some
members of the group.
Members of the group fled into shops in Banex Plaza where
computer accessories and other electronic gadgets are sold, disrupting business
activities for hours while some traders locked their shops to avoid being hit
by stray bullets.
Police sources said police surveillance units have been activated
in order to avert a repeat of Monday’s violent clashes that led to the death of
many people.
“We have activated all surveillance units in order to
forestall further breakdown of law and order All the nooks and crannies of
Abuja are under surveillance. All our men and patrols vehicles are out”, the
source said.
