The National Drug and Law Enforcement Agency
(NDLEA), Kwara State Command, on Thursday arrested eight suspected drug barons,
including one on wanted list since 2017 in the state.
The state Commandant of NDLEA, Mr. Ambrose Umoru,
who spoke with journalists in Ilorin on the major breakthrough of the command,
said the arrest was achieved through the concerted efforts of the command that
had been working round the clock to arrest the suspected drug barons in the
state.
He said the command located the warehouse of the
suspect as a result of intelligence
gatherings by officers of the command, adding that the command could not effect
his arrest, but was able to recover about 396 bags of cannabis in 2017 which
made the command declare him wanted since then.
Umoru attributed the arrest to the operation of the
command tagged” ‘Operation keep Kwara drug-free’, which has resulted in a total
arrest of seven suspected dealers and 19 people who use drugs.
The commandant also stated that the command has
begun voluntary drug test on youths and adults in the state, who are into the
use of narcotic and psychotropic substances.
He said the test, which would be sponsored by the state
command of the NDLEA is tagged ‘Know your child’s drug status’, noting that
those working in companies, industries and motor parks across the state would
also be subjected to the test.
Umoru said the purpose of the test was to determine
and ascertain those that are into the discriminate use of narcotic drugs and
psychotropic substances in the state.
The commandant, therefore, encouraged parents,
relations, and guidance, who may have young ones or loved ones they suspect to
have been drug abusers to bring them to the state command in Ilorin for the
test.
