The House of Representatives Committee on Finance
has ordered the Nigerian Examination Council (NECO) to pay the federal government
the N6 billion shortfalls of remittances of its operating surplus from 2014 to
2019.
The Chairman of the Committee, James Faleke, at a
hearing on the matter on Wednesday said NECO owes the federal government N6.6 billion
in unremitted surplus.
However, while reacting, the Director of Finance
and Administration, NECO, Dr. Jacob Ekele, said their major problem was that
about 19 states still owe NECO, as the examination was done for them on credit,
especially Zamfara State.
He told the lawmakers that the debt had affected
prompt remittances into the Consolidation Revenue Fund (CRF).
"In some states, the governments pay for the
students while they were still owe us," he said.
In his reaction, Faleke demanded that NECO provide all relevant
documents to show its income, expenditure and remittance between 2011 and 2019.
He explained that the Auditor General of the
Federation’s report suggested that NECO owed CRF N6 billion.
According to him, "NECO should present its
audited report from 2011 to 2019, which is the reconciliation report between
the organisation and the auditor general's office. When you have done those
reports, let’s see the negative balances between you and the auditor general as
well as that between you and the AGF office. Come with receipts of payment and
present them to us on March 4."
