The Governor of Kano, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje is set to
announce the appointment of a new emir, following the removal of Emir Muhammadu
Sanusi ll earlier today.
An impeccable source in the Government House had hinted that
the governor, who is currently presiding over an emergency Executive Council
Meeting, will announce the new emir anytime soon.
Although there is no tentative person to be appointed,
speculations are rife that the governor will announce Emir of Bichi, Aminu Ado
Bayero to replace the embattled Sanusi, while the emir of Bichi is to be
replace by Galadima of Kano, Alhaji Abbas Sanusi, account to sources.
Our correspondent recalled that Ganduje announced the
removal of the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria over disrespect
to constituted authorities, an act contrary to part 3, section 13 of the Kano
State Emirate Law 2019.
The secretary to the state government (SSG), Alhaji Usman
Alhaji, in a statement read to journalists at Government House on Monday, said:
"The Kano State executive council under the chairmanship of his
Excellency, the Governor of Kano state, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has
unanimously approved the immediate removal/dethronement of the Emir of Kano
Emirate Muhammad Sanusi II.
"The Emir of Kano is in total disrespect to lawful
instruction from the office of the state Governor and other lawful authorities,
including his persistent refusal to attend official meetings and program
organised by the government without any lawful justification which amount to
total insubordination.
" It is on record and in so many instances ,Malam
Muhammad Sanusi II has been found breaching part 3 section 13 (a-e) of the Kano
state emirate law 2019 and if left unchecked will destroy the good and established
image of the Kano Emirate.
"This removal is made after due consultation with
relevant stakeholders and in compliance with part 3 section of the Kano state
emirate law 2019 and other reasons stated above.
" The removal was reached in order to safeguard
sanctity, culture, tradition, religion and prestige of the Kano Emirate built
over a thousand years.
The statement which was signed and read to newsmen at about
12.45 pm by the secretary to the state government, Alhaji Usman Alhaji before
the state executive council meeting, further stated that "His Excellency
Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje called on the general public to remain calm, law
abiding and go about their normal businesses. While a new emir of Kano Emirate
will soon be appointed".
It was also observed that security has been beefed up across
the state, as people move about their normal business.
Ganduje Places Sanusi on House Arrest, Muhammadu Sanusi as
detachment of heavily armed security men barricaded emir's palace. Amidst
uneasy calm, the eagle eyes security men had prevented exit and entry into the
palace. Besides, a water tight security guard also mounted at the entrance of
Kano state government and the state house of assembly, apparently to forestall
protest. Although, Governor Ganduje is presently presiding over emergency
security meeting, a credible source at the Government house told our
correspondent that Ganduje is set to announce new emir.
It was also observed that there was a jubilation by the
supporters of the emir of Bichi Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, while the supporters
of the dethroned emir Malam Sanusi was seen with in sad mood.
Combined team of security operatives have been deployed
along the palace, while the emirate have been filled with security to oppose
any attempt to cause trouble.
Unconfirmed reports had it that the thete is a waiting
flight to fly the former emir to Abuja through Malam Aminu Kano Airport (MAKA).
However, it was a
free-for-all fight at Kano House of Assembly when the Deputy Speaker and
chairman of the Public Complaints and Petition Committee, Hamisu Ibrahim
Chidari raised observation over the ongoing investigation of petitions of
alleged violation of the culture, tradition and religious values of the people
of Kano by Emir Muhammad Sanusi II.
Trouble broke out when Chidari in his attempt to make his
observation known to members, he instantly opposed by members identified as
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members.
In the process, a heated debate ensued which resulted into a
physical combat, as the opposition members struggled to take control of the
mace.
In the process, the mace was instantly rescued by security
men and the Sergeant of Arm attached to the Assembly.
The fisticuff lasted for about 20 minutes before the House
restored back to normalcy and went for a 30 minutes break.
As at the time of filling this report, commercial activities
are still ongoing, while security
operatives have been deployed at all the strategic locations.
