Fighter jets of the Nigerian Air Force on Monday
destroyed a hideout of the Islamic State for West African Province (ISWAP) in
Mina, Borno State, killing many fighters of the terrorist group.
The air strikes were carried out following
intelligence that showed that the terrorists assembled in some settlements in
Mina along Gulumba-Gana-Kumshe axis.
The bombardment, according to a NAF war update, was
part of the ongoing ‘Operation Decisive Edge’ designed to target mined areas of
Sambisa forest where Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, and his commanders
were hiding.
"The Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation Lafiya
Dole has destroyed an ISWAP hideout and neutralised some of their fighters at
Mina in the Gulumba Gana-Kumshe axis in the Northern part of Borno State.
"The mission, which was executed on March 4, 2020,
as part of the ongoing Operation Decisive Edge, was undertaken after a NAF
Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft spotted the
terrorists assembling in the vicinity of some compounds within the settlement,"
he said.
The update signed by NAF Spokesman, Air Commodore
Ibikunle Daramola, said: "Fighter jets scrambled by the ATF to engage the
location scored accurate hits in the target area leading to the destruction of
some terrorists’ structures as well as the neutralisation of some of their
fighters.
"The NAF, in furtherance of the objective of
restoring peace and security in the North-east region and operating in concert
with surface forces, will continue to carry out air interdiction missions
against the enemies of our country."
