In its bid to sanitise the state, especially the
highbrow areas, of filthiness, the Lagos State Special Committee on Cleanup Ikoyi
and Victoria Island took its campaign to restore sanity to Obalende area of
Ikoyi as operatives dislodged illegal parks, garages, vehicles operators and
traders who converted the green areas and Obalende under bridge to bus parks.
The operatives also eased traffic as several
commercial vehicles, which parked on Obalende Road were towed away.
The operation, which involved all the enforcement
teams in the state, visited Odoo Street, Ojo Street, Obalende Road, Passport
Road and Keffi Road, where illegal structures were dismantled and items on sale
confiscated.
At the Obalende roundabout, close to the Police
Force Headquarters Annex, an illegal market was sealed up with all the items on
sale seized.
The team also sealed several shanties acting as
brothels, and arrested several prostitutes who resided in the shanties which
also serve as abode to people with questionable characters.
As the enforcement lasted for several hours, all
illegal structures that seemed to have harboured miscreants as well as shanties
were dismantled while the team ensured that the wreckage were carted away by
LAWMA trucks as the operation progressed.
According to the Director of Operations of the
Committee, Mr. Ayo Williams, a total of 42 people were arrested for various environmental
offences and 38 vehicles impounded.
He said that those arrested for environmental offences
were immediately prosecuted accordingly by the Lagos State Special Offences
Mobile Court at the premises of transfer-loading station in Sura, Lagos Island.
He emphasised that as the Clean-up exercise
continued, the team would secure all the cleared open spaces to prevent the
return of the miscreants within IKoyi and Victoria Island axis.
