INEC Sets October Date for Rivers Rerun


The Independent National Electoral Commission  (INEC)  has said the suspended rerun elections in Rivers State would hold in   middle of  October this year.


Commissioner in charge of Operations in INEC,  Amina Zakari, gave this hint on Thursday during a meeting with candidates and political party chairmen at the Rivers state office of the electoral body in Port Harcourt 

Zakari, who said the elections in Rivers State was not inconclusive but suspended,  said INEC would be free for elections after the Edo state governorship elections slated for September.

"We are looking at mid October for the elections so that we can do the budgets properly. The Edo state elections is coming up in September.  We need to recruit, train. We need to do this elections conclusively", she said.  

Continuing,  she said the essence of the meeting was to see how improvement could be made on areas that resulted in suspension of the exercise last time.

Amina said the rerun elections would be conducted in 22 constituencies in the state,  adding that over voting, missing EC8A results, missing result sheets in some units were among several reasons the elections were suspended in the constituencies. 

She appealed to party leaders to prevail on their members to ensure the elections were peaceful. 

She also urged the various political parties to see how they can agree with INEC on a date not later than mid October for the elections to be conducted.

In his contribution, the Commissioner of Police , Rivers state,  Francis Odesanya, also said the police would  be professional in the discharge of its functions during the election.

Candidates  of All Progressive Congress, (APC)and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers south senatorial district, Senator Magnus Abe and Senator Olaka Wogu, respectively called for a comprehensive information  from INEC where elections would be conducted.

They also called for sanctions for those who violated rules for elections in the last rerun elections as a deterrent measure.
