IPOB: We Seek to Free Biafrans, Not Take Control of Nigeria

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has said it seeks to remind the federal government that its agitations are geared towards attaining freedom for Biafrans and not taking over Nigeria.

In a statement signed by the group’s Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, it contended that the clarification became imperative, following the growing harshness of the federal government towards the group and its members, which tends to portray the group as people working to undermine Nigeria.

Powerful said the group is not concerned about how Nigerian leaders choose to run it, so long Biafrans were freed.

It also stated that President Muhammadu Buhari's government underestimated the strength of IPOB and the appeal of Nnamdi Kanu's message which continues to gain ground on a daily basis around the whole world.

According to the statement, "IPOB is a liberation movement dedicated to the self-determination of the indigenous people of Biafra in line with universally acclaimed processes and procedure.

"Having launched Biafrexit, IPOB is fully committed to pursuing a referendum to determine once and for all the issue of the sovereignty of Biafra.

"We thank the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and all those with common sense who understand that all those arrested in Aba must be released because our quest is the restoration of Biafra not to take over the rulership of Nigeria.
"We also urge the AGF and his team which understand the meaning of non-violent approach towards the liberation of those in bondage in this country to extend the release to other members who are detained in different prisons and security cells in the country and advise the president to release our leader without conditional attachment."

The group said the issue of Biafra self-determination cannot be swept under the carpet because Biafra is in black Africa where acceptable civilized standards are lacking, adding that what was good for Scotland and Britain at large is also good for Biafra.

“We therefore urge the AGF to continue on this path by releasing all Biafra detainees, including the leader of IPOB Worldwide, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, whose continued illegal detention is the primary reason why Nigeria is falling apart today,” Powerful stated.
