Appeal Court Reserves Ruling On Kashamu’s Extradition

The Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, has reserved its judgment in the appeal filed by the Federal Government seeking the extradition of the Senator Buruji Kashamu, lawmaker representing Ogun East, to the United States of America.
It could be recalled that the government claimed to have received a request by the US Government to deliver Kashamu up for prosecution for his alleged role in an illicit drug deal in the US but Kashamu had, in 2015, secured two separate judgments by Justices Okon Abang and Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court restraining the Federal Government from extraditing him.
Dissatisfied, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) approached the Court of Appeal seeking to overturn the judgments of Justices Abang and Buba, to pave the way for Kashamu’s extradition.
When the case resumed on Thursday, counsel for the AGF, Emeka Ngige (SAN), told the appellate court that Kashamu concealed material facts before Justices Abang and Buba, where he obtained restraining orders against the Federal Government.
He declared that Kashamu’s suits, decided by Justices Abang and Buba, were based on mere hearsay, contending that the two lower court judges miscarried justice adding that both Justices failed to evaluate the documentary evidence placed before them before giving their verdicts.
Responding, Kashamu’s lawyer, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), opposed Ngige and insisted that the decisions by the high court judges were in order.
In its ruling, the three-man Appeal Court panel, presided over by Justice Joseph Ikhegh, reserved judgment in the appeal till a date to be communicated to the parties.

Drug Insecurity: House Urges FG to Fund Indigenous Drug Research

The House of Representatives on Tuesday urged the federal government to invest more in the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development in order to encourage local and indigenous research. The House also urged the government to revisit the National Drug Policy as a way to promote and boost the medical industry. Court Stops National Assembly From Taking Over Bauchi Assembly

As the National Assembly received a report from the committee it sent to Bauchi State to probe the leadership crisis rocking the state assembly since its inauguration last month, the state high court on Monday issued an order of interim injunction ordering that the present Speaker and Deputy Speaker, Abubakar Suleiman and Danlami Kawule respectively,   should continue leading the assembly pending the determination of the suit before it.
