The new Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly,
Titus Uba, and 21 other members on Wednesday took over the assembly following the vacation
of the complex by security agencies.
Uba, who confirmed the development to journalists during
an inspection of the assembly complex, said members and staff of the assembly
now have free access to their offices to carry out their official duties.
He acknowledged the support and solidarity of the Benue
people and all Nigerians against the siege in the Benue State House of
Assembly, which also occurred at the National Assembly yesterday.
The speaker said with the new development, members
would reconvene on the new adjournment date to carry out their constitutional
responsibilities of making legislation for the good governance of the state.
Security operatives had taken over the premises of
the state assembly and provided cover for the impeached Speaker, Terkimbi
Ikyange APC-led faction to hold plenary while 22 members of the assembly of the
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were denied access.
The sitting was done in spite of a court injunction
restraining Ikyange and three others from parading themselves as principal
officers of the assembly pending the hearing and determination of a motion on
notice filed by 22 members of the assembly.
The Speaker was flanked by 21 other assembly members
during the inspection tour.
Uba had confirmed that peace has returned to the
assembly as he formerly resumed at the complex.
While speaking with journalists during an inspection
of the assembly complex, he said members and staff of the assembly now have
free access to their offices to carry out their official duties.
