The 6 Division of the Nigerian Army has declared that it would treat any soldier seen at polling units during the forthcoming 2019 general elections as an impostor.

The Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 6 Division, Colonel Aminu Illiyasu, disclosed this on Wednesday while briefing newsmen in Port Harcourt, on the roles of the Nigerian Army during the elections.

Illiyasu urged members of the public to watch out for hoodlums in military camouflage who may be parading themselves as personnel of the Nigerian Army on election days, and report to the appropriate authority.

He said: "Any soldier seen at any polling unit should be treated as impostors. We mean, anybody that presents himself at any polling unit in a military-like attire is an impostor."

He said the division has concluded all necessary arrangements to aid civil authorities in the smooth and peaceful conduct of the general elections.

Illiasu said: "In line with our constitutional mandate, 6 Division, Nigerian Army, which covers Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers State has concluded all necessary arrangements to aid civil authorities in the smooth and peaceful conduct of the 2019 general elections.

"Participating troops have undergone series of trainings and issued with the Code of Conduct for Armed Forces of Nigeria during elections and Rule of Engagement for Operation Safe Conduct during the 2019 general elections.

"The General Officer Commanding (GOC), Major-General Jamil Sarham wishes to affirm the neutrality of the troops and to continue to remain apolitical as they conduct their assigned duties professionally.

"We also wish to use this medium to warn all would-be troublemakers before, during and after elections to have a change of mind and action as our troops will not tolerate any act by anyone to truncate the electoral process."

The Army spokesman also said 6 Division and sister agencies would today (Thursday) conduct a confidence building patrol within Port Harcourt metropolis as part of the Operation Safe Conduct for the election.
