For the umpteenth time, Nigerians living in South Africa bore the brunt of a fresh wave of xenophobia that broke out on Tuesday, which left five persons injured in the melee. 

According to reports, the current attack happened at Mpumalamga Province and in some parts of Witbank with the residents attacking their Nigerian neighbours.

This is coming barely weeks after President Muhammadu Buhari visited South Africa to dialogue with his South African counterpart  to address the incessant  xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other African migrants.

It was gathered from Nigerians living in SA that the attack began when some of the indigenes started attacking shops and businesses belonging to Nigerians and other African nationals for no just cause. 

While they looted some shops, they burnt others down before the police responded to the attack and restored normalcy to the affected areas, albeit belatedly as the damage had been done. 

It was also in the process looting and vandalising the shops that five Nigerians were beaten up and injured.

Meanwhile, reports said the leadership of Nigerian Citizens In South Africa (NICASA) and Nigeria’s Consular General to South Africa in Johannesburg, Godwin Adama, are on their way to Witbank, Mpumalanga to mediate. 


As at press time, a text message sent to the  Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, was not acknowledged.

Court Stops National Assembly From Taking Over Bauchi Assembly

As the National Assembly received a report from the committee it sent to Bauchi State to probe the leadership crisis rocking the state assembly since its inauguration last month, the state high court on Monday issued an order of interim injunction ordering that the present Speaker and Deputy Speaker, Abubakar Suleiman and Danlami Kawule respectively,   should continue leading the assembly pending the determination of the suit before it. Justice Muazu Abubakar, who issued the order, fixed October 3, 2019, for hearing of the motion and substantive application filed by the speaker, deputy speaker and other 11 members of the assembly who participated in the assembly election. Drug Insecurity: House Urges FG to Fund Indigenous Drug Research

The House of Representatives on Tuesday urged the federal government to invest more in the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development in order to encourage local and indigenous research. The House also urged the government to revisit the National Drug Policy as a way to promote and boost the medical industry. It directed its Committees on Health Institutions, Health Care Services and Science and Technology to organise a round table discussion to chart a probable course for the development of locally made drugs.
